Kenya Railways has announced major railway developments under the Nairobi Commuter Rail Service as part of Kenya’s preparations to co-host the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) alongside Uganda and Tanzania.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, the corporation confirmed plans to improve rail connectivity to key match venues, including Nyayo National Stadium, Talanta Sports City and Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani.

A key highlight of the plan is the proposed construction of a railway station adjacent to Nyayo National Stadium, alongside a new spur line running from Nairobi Central Station through the Nyayo Stadium area and Kibera, extending towards Talanta Sports City.

Kenya Railways noted that the Nairobi Central–Limuru commuter corridor has been identified as a viable route for the spur line, which is expected to play a critical role during the continental showpiece.

“The development of the rail spur line is aimed at providing an effective transport solution that will ensure easy access to and from the venues of the soccer event,” Kenya Railways said in the statement.

The corporation added that the project will enhance mobility for fans, officials and workers during the tournament while easing pressure on road transport within the city.

“The spur line will guarantee commuters a safe, reliable and affordable transport option, thus ensuring ease of movement during AFCON 2027,” the statement added.

Nyayo National Stadium will also serve as a central operations and training hub during the tournament, owing to its strategic location within the city.

To pave way for the project, Kenya Railways confirmed that encroachers along the identified railway corridor were issued with notices to vacate.

The corporation warned that all illegal structures on the corridor will be demolished or removed without further notice, at the owners’ risk and cost.

The rail upgrades form part of broader government efforts to ensure seamless mobility and successful hosting of AFCON 2027.
