JSC invites applications for Supreme Court vacancy after Justice Ibrahim’s death

In a Gazette notice, Chief Justice and JSC Chairperson Martha Koome invited qualified Kenyans to apply for the position in accordance with the Constitution and the Judicial Service Act and pursuant to Article 166 of the Constitution.
The successful candidate will serve until the mandatory retirement age of 70 years, with an option for early retirement at 65.
According to JSC, the judge will earn a gross monthly salary ranging between Ksh. 956,192 and Ksh. 1,268,996, exclusive of benefits, as determined by the Salaries and Remuneration Commission.
Applicants are required to hold a law degree from a recognised university or be advocates of the High Court of Kenya, and must have at least 15 years’ experience either as a superior court judge or as a distinguished legal practitioner, academic, or judicial officer.
Candidates must also meet the integrity and leadership standards set out in Chapter Six of the Constitution.
Justice Mohamed Ibrahim’s death on December 17, 2025, created a vacancy in the seven-member bench of the Supreme Court.
Ibrahim was widely respected for his contribution to Kenya’s constitutional jurisprudence and service in the Judiciary.
