According to Mwatate United assistant head coach Zablon Mwale, the club’s struggles have largely been caused by recruiting players from the Division One League and others with little experience at higher competitive levels.
“During the upcoming mid-season transfer window we have to reinforce our squad. We have already identified the players and now it is just a matter of implementation,” said Mwale.
He added that the club is actively monitoring players from the Kenya Premier League (KPL) and fellow NSL sides to strengthen the squad.
“We are targeting between eight to ten players in the short January transfer window. About 80% of our current squad is made up of Division One League players, and we only have one experienced NSL midfielder. We need to revamp the team with KPL and NSL players,” he explained.
Despite their struggles, Mwale remains optimistic ahead of their final match before the Christmas break, where Mwatate United will face Talanta FC. He believes his side can end the year on a positive note.
“We hope for the best. We are almost there. We have just been unlucky, but I believe Talanta will be a good side to sign off the year with,” he said.
Currently, Mwatate United sit at the bottom of the NSL standings with just seven points from 14 matches. They have managed only one win, four draws, and suffered nine defeats so far this season.
Mwatate United were reinstated back into the National Super League this season following a prolonged court battle that began in 2023, after their league slot was controversially sold to Dimba Patriots.
