The Kenya Meteorological Department has warned of high flood risks along the Tana River basin between April 28 and May 4 amid expected high rainfall.

The weatherman reported that moderate to heavy rainfall is expected across the basin over the next 7 days, following continued rains observed in the past week.

There is a high flood risk across parts of Garissa, Hola, and Garsen.

Data collected from the Garissa Weather station showed that water levels are projected to rise significantly, reaching up to 6.4m by 2nd May, exceeding the flood warning threshold of 5.0m.

"Levels are expected to remain elevated before gradually declining towards early next week," Kenya MET said in its latest issue.

Communities near riverbanks have been urged to remain alert.

Rainfall is expected to continue across several parts of the country, mostly over the highlands East and West of the Rift Valley, Nairobi, the Rift Valley region, the Coast, and Northeastern Kenya.

Torrential rains over the last two days, Monday and Tuesday, have caused significant flooding in various areas. This has been accompanied by harsh winds.
