Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has cancelled a planned trip to London next month to oversee his Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP) nominations ahead of the Ol Kalou parliamentary by-election slated for July 16.

In a message shared by the party, Gachagua said he would prioritise the mini-poll preparations, as DCP seeks to field a candidate for the seat.

The by-election was gazetted by the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) after the seat fell vacant following the death of Ol Kalou MP David Njuguna Kiaraho.

A notice cited by IEBC indicated that National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula formally declared the seat vacant through a special Gazette Notice issued on April 20, in line with constitutional provisions and the Elections Act.

Kiaraho died on March 29, 2026 while receiving treatment at The Nairobi Hospital.

IEBC said the by-election will be held on Thursday, July 16, 2026.

The Ol Kalou contest is expected to draw intense competition as parties begin internal processes to pick candidates for the vote.
