Tusker FC striker
Ian Simiyu is relishing his form following another impressive performance that
saw his team defeat Sofapaka 2-0 in an FKF Premier League match that was played
at the Kasarani Annex, as the brewers registered their third straight league
win.
The win leaves
Tusker second on the table with 21 points, level with leaders Kenya Police FC,
ahead of a clash with Nairobi United on Wednesday.
The former National
Super League top scorer scored in both halves to seal the win, highlighting his
growing importance in the Tusker attack, and he credited 'faith' and ‘team work’
for the impressive return.
"First of all,
I thank God. By God, we have come this far, said Simiyu. "
Since joining the
Premier League this season, the confidence of the striker has grown significantly, saying this is driven by an ambition to challenge himself to the
top.
He explains: “I was
a top scorer in the NSL, which is why I joined the Premier League. What I do
want is to become one of the best scorers in the Premier League, by the grace
of God," Simiyu added.
His main success has
been his association with old striker Erick Kapaito, a two-time Golden Boot
winner who has been shaping up the frontline of Tusker with his experience.
“Erico is a veteran
and very deadly. I learn from him," Simiyu said.” He knows how to use me,
and I know how to run. We have been quite good as a team all through the entire
week.”
Head coach Charles
Okere saluted the character and discipline in the squad, particularly following
the recent departures that have made Tusker deepen its ranks. The Brewers have
lost Issa Lumumba, Curtis Wekesa, and George Onyango, who have all joined the military
and police service.
“First of all, it’s
a blessing because most of us have different career paths, and if they get
opportunities the club has never denied them an opportunity. We had Issa
Lumumba, Curtis Wekesa, and George Onyango who have joined the military
environment, meaning our depth is limited,” remarked Okere.
“Nevertheless, the
players that are there are still giving what we want in a match, so it's
something we also celebrate.”
The win placed Tusker
second on the table with a 21 points, same as leaders Police.
