Detectives in Dagoretti have arrested three suspects, including a bartender and a security officer, as part of an ongoing murder investigation.
There is grief and anger among members of the family of 26-year-old Edwin Nyariki as they prepare to lay him to rest on Thursday, July 9.
According to the family, a disagreement between Nyariki and staff at a pub in Kawangware over an unsettled Ksh.1,000 bill turned tragic. They stated that a heated argument quickly escalated into violence that ended in his death.
“Alikuwa amekaa hapa, alipigiwa hapa na kuuawa,” said a relative.
The deceased’s brother, who had accompanied him to the pub, pointed out the spot where he said the victim was assaulted. The family alleged that Nyariki was beaten unconscious and later thrown out of the club.
“Nilikuja hapa kufuatilia hii kesi. Manager akaniambia ndugu yangu alikuwa amekaa hapa, akaitisha maji na pombe na alikuwa anaangalia game. Baadaye aliulizwa pesa na akasema atalipa baadaye. Hatujui nini ilifanyika lakini alianza kupigwa na kuvutwa. Walipoona amelemewa wakaenda wakamtupa nje,” said Job Nyambega, the deceased’s brother.
The family noted that Nyariki also lost his mobile phone and jacket during the ordeal. An autopsy has since confirmed that he died from excessive internal bleeding and suffered broken limbs and injuries to his hands.
“Asubuhi ndio alipatikana hapo nje akiwa amevunjika na alisema walimpiga. Akapelekwa hospitali lakini alikuwa amekufa. Tunataka justice,” said Nyambega.
Nyariki's father described his son as a hardworking young man and father of two. On the night he died, the deceased had reportedly gone to the club to watch a football match.
“Huyo kijana wangu alikuwa mzuri sana. Alikuwa ananisaidia huko nyumbani na amekuwa akienda hiyo club hata wanamjua. Sijui mbona walimfanyia hivyo na kumuua baada ya kumpiga na kuvunjika. Tunataka tu haki,” said Nelson Nyariki, the deceased’s father.
The club manager, Thomas Mololo, confirmed that three employees, a bouncer, a waiter and a cleaner, had been arrested in connection with the incident.
“Nilimuona huyo jamaa akiwa amekaa hapo. Baadaye nikaambiwa kulikuwa na vurugu juu ya bill na wale walikuwa shift walimpiga. Polisi walikuja na sasa hao wanaodaiwa kumpiga wamekamatwa,” said Mololo.
The three suspects have since been arraigned and remain in police custody as detectives continue with investigations.
