President William Ruto has affirmed that the contested Migingo Island is squarely in Kenyan territory and warned security forces from neighbouring countries against harassing Kenyan fishermen.
Speaking during the fifth edition of the Piny Luo Festival
held in Nyatike, Migori County, President Ruto said his administration will pursue
all means available to ensure that the boundary dispute in Migingo is resolved.
The head of state added that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs will use diplomatic channels to ensure the Migingo Island row is settled once and for all.
"I agree with you, just as our party leader has said, and as the Nyamira governor, Siaya and Governor Wanga have said, we have agreed that Migingo is part of Kenya. We will ensure, through all diplomatic means, that our citizens are not harassed by security forces from other countries. We will make sure there is peace so that we can carry out business," he said.
President Ruto lauded the strong culture showcased at the event urging the country to embrace the spirit of diversity.
"Guided by this spirit, we remain committed to uniting our country by rallying Kenyans around the country's development priorities and by transforming our politics into an agenda-based, free from tribalism, hatred, and division, and anchored on strong national political parties," he said.
He expressed his commitment to supporting the establishment of a proper cultural centre at the Thimlich Ohinga Historic Site to preserve the region's history, promote tourism, and pass our heritage on to future generations.
"Preserving our rich and diverse cultural heritage is the
foundation of unity. Culture brings people together, strengthens community
bonds, and from this shared identity builds a united nation anchored in
diversity and mutual respect," he stated.
