The president vowed to restore calm after violence in Trans Mara that has left scores dead and hundreds displaced, even as police said they had arrested six suspects linked to the clashes.
The government has declared 14 areas in Trans Mara West and South security disturbed and dangerous.
The situation remains tense in parts of Narok County following violent clashes that claimed seven lives and forced hundreds of residents to flee their homes in Angata Barrikoi area of Trans Mara.
“These people have to return the guns to the police. If they don't, they will face it. We must stop criminals, terrorists and all others who are infringing on the peace and security of other citizens. And we are not begging,” said President Ruto.
Deputy Inspector General of Police Eliud Lagat said security operations are now targeting the masterminds behind the violence, with six suspects already in custody.
“Since Saturday, we have had calm in the Trans Mara area. We are now closing in on the perpetrators and financiers. So far, we have arrested six individuals, including a Lolgorian MCA,” Lagat remarked.
Even though the conflict has been attributed to a land dispute, influential individuals are reported to be exploiting the situation to incite violence.
“The main cause of the incitement and chaos there is a land issue, but some suspects are inciting residents on unrelated issues simply to cause chaos,” added Lagat.
Despite calm returning to some areas and displaced families beginning to return home, police say the curfew will remain in force until security agencies are satisfied the situation is fully under control.
“People have started going back. The curfew will still continue until we are sure of safety,” said the DIG.
Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen has okayed a 30-day security operation, listing 14 areas as disturbed.
In Trans Mara West, the Naroru area has been listed. In Trans Mara South, 13 areas have been listed, including Oldonyo-Orok, Siteti, Ololoma, Corner, Ratiki, Isokon, Kerinkani, Kondamet, Olkiloriti, Angata Barikoi, Kapkeres, Lolgorian Town, and Mashangwa.
