A new Infotrak poll shows that fewer than half of Kenyans expect to celebrate Christmas the way they have in previous years, with most attributing the change to economic pressures.

The nationwide survey found that 45% of respondents plan to celebrate Christmas this year, a slight increase from 40% last year.

However, 55% said they will not mark the festive period as they usually do, highlighting the continued strain on household finances.

Among those who will skip celebrations, 78% cited lack of money as the main reason. Another 16% said they had lost interest in the festivities, while 11% reported they would be working during the period.

Financial constraints were especially severe among residents of Nairobi and Western Kenya, where 87% said they could not afford to celebrate.

For the 45% who will celebrate, priorities are shifting toward simpler and more family-centered gatherings.

The poll shows that 53% plan to spend time with family, 31% will attend church or prayers, and 20% expect to spend time with friends.

Traditional festive activities are declining, with family time dropping from 63% in 2024 to 53% this year, and social gatherings with friends also falling.

Regional differences remain, with Nairobi residents the most likely to go on holiday (21%), while the Coast tops the list for partying (14%).

Researchers say the findings reflect the broader national mood, where high living costs continue to weigh on households.

Many families appear to be opting for scaled-back celebrations rather than canceling entirely, focusing on faith and family while keeping spending low.

Despite the economic pressures, analysts note the slight increase in people planning to celebrate compared with last year as a sign of cautious optimism heading into the holidays.
