Her ascension marks a historic milestone, making her one of the most influential women to lead the sport in the region, following in the footsteps of Dr. James Kenani, who served two consecutive terms.
Speaking after her election during the Elective Annual General Meeting, Wanjiru described her mandate as one rooted in responsibility, service, and opportunity.
A former tennis player and seasoned administrator, she brings vast experience to the role, having previously made history as the first woman elected President of ITF Zone IV and currently serving as Vice President of the Confederation of African Tennis (CAT).
“I have understood our systems, our people, our challenges, and most importantly, our potential,” Wanjiru said. “One of the biggest lessons I learned while serving on the council is just how enormous the potential within Tennis Kenya truly is.”
She paid tribute to her predecessor, crediting Dr. Kenani for laying a foundation of integrity and trust.
“He taught us that integrity is not a slogan; it is the foundation of every organisation,” she noted, acknowledging his mentorship and steady leadership.
Outlining her vision, Wanjiru highlighted four key priorities that will guide her tenure. Top of the agenda is governance and trust, with a commitment to clear systems, transparent communication, and consistent decision-making.
She also pledged to build a listening federation, placing players, parents, clubs, and counties at the centre of policy decisions.
With global tennis funding shrinking, partnerships and sustainability will be another focus area, as the federation seeks new collaborations to expand opportunities for players, coaches, and officials.
Additionally, Wanjiru aims to strengthen the Tennis Kenya brand through digital platforms and data-driven storytelling to enhance credibility and visibility.
At the heart of her philosophy, she stressed, is the player. “Tennis exists for the player. Every system we design must give players a fair chance to play, grow, and reach their potential.”
The AGM also ushered in a new leadership team. Nancy Nduku was elected Secretary General, while John Wambua clinched the Wheelchair Representative position.
Athlete representation will be led by 2024 African Singles and Doubles Champion Angella Okutoyi and Ismael Changawa.
