The Kenya Medical Practitioners, Pharmacists and Dentists
Union (KMPDU) has announced a breakthrough following a high-level consultative
meeting with the Nandi County government, resulting in commitments on
promotions, contract appointments and postgraduate training for doctors.
In a statement issued by KMPDU
Secretary General Dr. Davji Atellah on Friday, the union said the engagement
was held on Thursday evening and was led by Nandi Governor Stephen Sang,
alongside the Deputy Governor, County Secretary, Chief Officers for Health and
Finance, and members of the County Public Service Board.
The union was represented by both its national and branch
leadership, led by Dr. Atellah, underscoring the urgency of the matters under
discussion.
The KMPDU boss described the
meeting as constructive and results-oriented, with deliberations focusing on
three key issues affecting doctors in the county.
On promotions, the county government
gave what the union termed a firm and unequivocal commitment to immediately
promote all doctors whose names had been submitted by KMPDU.
Dr Atellah said the promotions will be effected and reflected
in the March payslips, with four doctors moving from Job Group R to S; eight
from Job Group N/P to Q; and three from Job Group M to N.
“The county committed to issuing appointment letters to all 14
doctors currently on contract. Further, the county undertook to progressively
transition all affected doctors to Permanent and Pensionable (PNP) terms until
full absorption is achieved,” the doctors’ union leader stated.
On postgraduate training, the union said the county has
already released two doctors for further studies in January 2026.
Additional releases are planned in the next financial year as part
of efforts to support career progression and specialist training.
“This outcome marks a significant step forward in the union’s
relentless pursuit of fairness, dignity, and justice for doctors. In our
unwavering commitment to equity, we shall leave no doctor behind, one county at
a time. Unity remains our greatest strength,” Dr. Atellah stated.
