IG Kanja orders swift probe after CCTV footage shows police brutality in Nandi

Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja has ordered swift investigations into an incident of alleged misconduct by officers based at Nandi Hills Police Station, following the circulation of disturbing CCTV footage on social media.

In the now viral CCTV clip, ten armed police officers are seen assaulting young men who were playing pool in Nandi Hills town, an incident that has sparked widespread outrage.

In a statement issued on Friday, National Police Service (NPS) Spokesperson Muchiri Nyaga said the IG has personally viewed the footage and directed the Internal Affairs Unit to conclude investigations within three days, after which any officer found culpable will face appropriate action.

“The Inspector General of the National Police Service has personally gained sight of the galling clip and has ordered a comprehensive and swift investigation into the incident,” Nyaga said.

“This will be conducted with the utmost professionalism to establish the full facts and circumstances, and the Service will work closely with other independent institutions to ensure transparency and accountability. Upon conclusion of the investigation, any officer found culpable will be dealt with accordingly.”

A preliminary review by the NPS indicates that the incident occurred on January 10, 2026, with the police service said it is deeply concerned by the footage, which depicts serious misconduct by officers.

The NPS strongly condemned the conduct captured in the footage, describing it as “barbaric behaviour which has no place in a civilised society,” and noted that the actions amount to a violation of the National Police Service Act, the Code of Conduct for Police Officers, and fundamental human rights principles.

The police leadership further warned officers against misconduct, emphasising that service to the public must always remain courteous, respectful and professional, and that any deviation from this will be dealt with firmly and in accordance with the law.

“The National Police Service wishes to reassure the public that this isolated incident does not reflect the values, standards, and training of the Service. To all officers out there, service to the people must at all times remain courteous, respectful and professional,” Nyaga stated.

“Anything short of this shall be dealt with firmly, swiftly and as per the laws, regulations and procedures. NPS remains committed to our mission of serving and protecting all Kenyans in a fair, lawful, and professional manner.”

Members of the public with information that may assist the ongoing investigations have been urged to report to the nearest police station or call the toll-free numbers.

This comes after the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) also said it had begun investigations into the incident of alleged police brutality.

In an earlier statement, IPOA Chairperson Ahmed Issack Hassan said the authority had deployed a Rapid Investigations Team to Nandi Hills to “conduct thorough inquiries to establish the sequence of events, assess the conduct of the officers involved, and determine culpability if any, in line with the IPOA mandate.”
