The operation, carried out in Kabaa area, targeted two premises suspected to be among the county’s major producers and distributors of illicit alcohol. Officers recovered thousands of bottles of counterfeit spirits, fake Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) excise stamps, and large quantities of empty bottles bearing labels of popular alcohol brands, believed to have been used for repackaging and distribution.
Authorities said both premises were operating without licences. One of the stores was located within a residential neighbourhood, raising concerns over the exposure of residents, including children, to the illicit trade.
NACADA Chief Executive Officer Dr. Anthony Omerikwa, who was present during the raid, said one of the suspects had previously been arrested for similar offences. He added that the premises would be processed for forfeiture to the state in line with government directives aimed at dismantling illicit alcohol networks.
The raid was the third such operation in the region within two days, following similar crackdowns in Joska, Machakos town, and parts of neighbouring Makueni County.
The multi-agency team said enforcement operations against counterfeit and illicit alcohol production and distribution will continue as part of ongoing efforts to address public health and safety risks associated with the trade.
