Residents of Dede in Awendo, Migori County have raised concerns over the increasing cases of insecurity.
Speaking at Dede trading centre, residents urged security officers in the region to crack down on criminals responsible for breaking into business premises.
Led by Fred Onyango, the traders reported a series of break-ins into shops, with the most recent incident occurring two days ago.
Onyango, who is among the victims, stated that they have lost property worth millions of shillings to thieves in recent times.
He added that several shops, including his own, have been broken into and goods stolen.
The traders appealed to security authorities to intensify night patrols and suggested that the government should purchase a vehicle for the security officers stationed at Dede police post.
They also called on the National Police Service to increase the number of officers at Dede police post and other police stations within Awendo.
Fredrick Mule, another resident, appealed to the county government and Kenya Power to ensure that street lights at Dede market are functional, as they have been dysfunctional for the past four months.
A spot check at various police stations revealed a significant staff shortage. At Ranen police post in Awendo sub-county, only four officers are available to handle multiple responsibilities, including taking suspects to court.
