The Kenya Medical Practitioners, Pharmacists and Dentists Union (KMPDU) National Chairman, Dr. Abidan Mwachi, has been accepted as an Associate Fellow of the American College of Surgeons (ACS), one of the world's leading professional surgical organisations dedicated to advancing surgical excellence, ethics, education and patient care.

The recognition is awarded to surgeons whose education, training, professional achievements and ethical standards meet the College's requirements, marking an important milestone in their professional development.

Announcing the achievement, Dr. Mwachi described the recognition as a significant career milestone and reaffirmed his commitment to advancing surgical practice and patient care.

"This is an important milestone in my career," he said, noting that the ACS is "one of the top organizations for surgical excellence, ethical practices, education, and patient care."

He added that being accepted as an Associate Fellow signifies continued professional growth and commitment to quality surgical care.

"Being an Associate Fellow means I am on a path of ongoing professional growth and dedication to quality surgery," Dr. Mwachi said.

The surgeon said the recognition extends beyond personal achievement, expressing hope that it will strengthen efforts to improve surgical standards, mentorship, medical training and patient safety.

"This recognition is not just about me; it inspires me to improve surgical practices, mentorship, training, and patient safety," he said.

"I am committed to providing care that meets the best standards globally while focusing on our patients' needs."

Dr. Mwachi also said he looks forward to opportunities for international collaboration, education and knowledge sharing through the fellowship.

"I also look forward to the new opportunities this role brings for sharing ideas, education, and collaboration with others in the surgical field," he said.

The American College of Surgeons will formally confer the recognition during its Convocation Ceremony scheduled for September 26, 2026, at the Walter E. Washington Convention Center in Washington, D.C.

Accepting the honour, Dr. Mwachi said it comes with greater responsibility to uphold the highest standards of surgical practice.

"I accept this honor with gratitude and a renewed sense of responsibility," he said.

"Surgical excellence depends on the efforts of many people, including mentors, patients, and the lessons we learn along the way."
