Homa Bay PWD sorghum farmers receive boost to fight climate change

The funds were donated by Evans Okello, a casual construction worker from the county, who said the support would help cushion smallholder farmers against prolonged droughts and erratic rainfall linked to climate change.
Okello said many sorghum farmers, particularly persons with disabilities (PWDs), remain trapped in poverty despite their hard work, largely due to declining yields caused by unpredictable weather patterns.
“Our farmers put in a lot of effort, but climate change has made farming extremely difficult. This support will help PWD farmers adopt drought-resistant practices, improve yields and earn a better living,” he said.
The money will be used to support the adoption of drought-tolerant sorghum varieties, access to improved farm inputs and better planning of farming activities tailored to the needs of farmers with disabilities.
The donation forms part of the KSh 1 million Okello won through the Tuzidi Kuinuana campaign, a national consumer promotion by Kenya Breweries Limited (KBL) for its Senator Keg brand. The campaign rewards consumers with cash prizes aimed at improving livelihoods and supporting community initiatives.
Okello said he chose to invest part of his winnings in agriculture, noting that empowering farmers, especially those living with disabilities, was critical to building resilient rural economies amid climate shocks.
“This opportunity is not just about winning money. It is about using it to make a meaningful difference in the community,” he said.
Beyond supporting farmers, Okello said the win would also enable him to improve his own livelihood. He plans to leave casual labour and venture into construction equipment hire by purchasing machinery such as concrete vibrators.
“With this win, I can stop working as a casual labourer and start my own equipment hire business, which will allow me to manage and grow a sustainable enterprise,” he said.
