Police in Muhoroni subcounty are investigating an incident where a group of more than 20 armed goons stormed Chemelil Academy in Chemelil town, injuring four people and making away with cash and mobile phones.

The suspects, armed with crude weapons, gained entry into the school in the morning hours as students returned from the half-term break.

According to a police report, the school's chief principal, Abisai Samora, made a distress call alerting police that the institution was under attack.

During the attack, the suspects injured four people, inflicting soft tissue injuries and cut wounds. They are currently admitted at Nyang'oma Sub-County Hospital.

Police said the goons broke into the principal's office and that of his deputy, stealing cash totalling Sh12,000. They also made away with over 10 mobile phones belonging to teaching and non-teaching staff.

No student was injured during the incident, and all have been accounted for.

The suspects escaped into the thick sugarcane plantations towards Achego direction, police said.

Normalcy has since returned to the institution as police launch a manhunt for the suspects. The motive behind the attack remains unclear.

The school, including parents, has been embroiled in a row with the new management of Chemelil Sugar Factory following the leasing process that handed over the mill's management to a private investor.
