Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP) leader Rigathi Gachagua is set to lead a thanksgiving tour across Ol Kalou Constituency today following his party's decisive victory in the just-concluded parliamentary by-election.

The tour comes hours after DCP candidate Sammy Kamau Ngotho was declared the winner of the poll, giving the party its first Member of the National Assembly.

Gachagua, accompanied by elected leaders and supporters, is expected to traverse all wards in the constituency, making stopovers at Ndundori Gwa Kiongo, Ngorika, Tumaini, Ol Kalou Town and concluding the tour in Miharati Town.

Among the leaders expected to accompany him are Nyandarua Senator John Methu, Kipipiri MP Wanjiku Muhia and other DCP-allied politicians.

The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) declared Kamau the winner after he garnered 35,440 votes, defeating United Democratic Alliance (UDA) candidate Samuel Muchina Nyaga, who received 5,450 votes.

Jubilee Party candidate Wilson Kigwa finished third with 198 votes, followed by Stephen Wanyoike Waithaka (NLP) with 103 votes, Timothy Kamau Kariuki (PM) with 51, Edwin Kariiri Muchiri (PNU) with 28, Abdifatah Hussein Abdullahi (FPK) with 19, Edward Mathenge Mwaniki (KMM) with 16, and Rachael Wangui Njoroge (PDP) with 11 votes.

The IEBC said the by-election recorded a voter turnout of 57 per cent, with 41,656 ballots cast out of 73,480 registered voters.

Welcoming the victory, Gachagua described the outcome as historic for the party.

"Congratulations, Hon. Sammy Douglas Kamau Waweru, on your historic election as the Member of Parliament for Ol Kalou Constituency. You have won by a resounding margin, reflecting the unmistakable voice of the people. We thank the Almighty God for this great victory.

"To the great people of Ol Kalou, thank you for giving our party, DCP, its first Member of the National Assembly. Thank you, my great people, for refusing to sell your birthright and for being wise enough not to fall for the deception of development projects," Gachagua said.

The high-stakes by-election, held on Thursday, was marred by violence after armed men travelling in unmarked vehicles allegedly attacked residents, journalists and political supporters. Police also lobbed teargas at several polling stations to disperse crowds as tensions flared, leaving several people injured.

The contest had attracted national attention and was widely viewed as a political showdown between President William Ruto's UDA and Gachagua's DCP, with both camps deploying senior political figures to campaign for their candidates.

The by-election was necessitated by the death of former Ol Kalou MP David Kiaraho, making it the first parliamentary electoral contest in the constituency since the 2022 General Election.

The campaign period was characterised by intense political activity, with leaders from both sides traversing the constituency amid allegations of voter bribery and cash handouts.
