Kibera Soccer Ladies head coach George Okallo has praised his players for their discipline and growing confidence after the team continued its upward trajectory in the Kenya Women Premier League (FKF WPL).
Okallo was speaking following Kibera’s midweek 2–0 win over Zetech Sparks at the Marist International University College grounds in Karen, a result that lifted his side from eighth to sixth place on the league table with 17 points.
The coach said the performance reflected the team’s improvement as they head into the second half of the season.
“We are starting to see the results of our hard work in training. The players are responding well, and the confidence is growing with every match,” said Okallo.
Goals from Grace Wekesa and Pauline Ochieng sealed the victory for the Kibera-based side, who now sit eight points behind league leaders and defending champions Kenya Police Bullets. Vihiga Queens, Ulinzi Starlets, Trinity Starlets and Zetech Sparks occupy second to fifth places with 24, 23, 23 and 19 points respectively.
Kibera goalkeeper Vivian Shiyonzo, who was named Woman of the Match, said the victory would motivate the team ahead of their next fixture against Ulinzi Starlets on Sunday, January 18, at the Ulinzi Sports Complex.
“I’m happy with the win because it shows we are on the right track. Being awarded Woman of the Match is a great feeling, and I will continue working hard to keep more clean sheets to help my team achieve our dream of winning the title this season,” said Shiyonzo.
Her sentiments were echoed by Harambee Starlets forward Esse Mbeyu Akida, who recently returned to the FKF Women’s Premier League after signing for Kibera in October 2025 following the end of her contract with Greek giants PAOK.
“First, I thank God for giving me this opportunity to play again after being out for some time. It feels good to play for Kibera, and I hope my experience will help the team win titles,” Akida said, adding that she hopes to regain full fitness to feature regularly in the starting line-up.
Zetech Sparks head coach Harriet Fakhir blamed her side’s poor finishing for the defeat despite creating several scoring opportunities.
“The game was good, but we couldn’t manage to secure maximum points. We created almost five clear chances but failed to convert them, and that is what cost us,” said Fakhir, ahead of their next match against Kisped Queens at Mamboleo Stadium in Kisumu on Sunday.
She, however, praised her defenders for their resilience. “The defence fought well, but a few mistakes proved costly,” she added.
The league enters its second round this weekend, with Vihiga Queens set to host Bungoma Queens at Moi Stadium, Kisumu, while Kenya Police Bullets face Kayole Starlets at the Police Sacco Stadium.
