Mumia was charged with several counts under the Computer Misuse and Cybercrimes Act, 2018, after prosecutors accused him of circulating doctored images suggesting that the Head of State was critically ill or dead.
The accused was released on a cash bail of Ksh.500,000 pending further proceedings.
Court documents indicate that the alleged offence occurred on December 30, 2025 at an undisclosed location within the country. The prosecution claims Mumia knowingly shared false information through Facebook and Instagram, fully aware that the content was untrue.
According to the charge sheet, Mumia allegedly operated a Facebook account under the name Robinson Kipruto Ngetich through which he published images portraying President Ruto lying on a bed and falsely implying that he had died or was in critical condition.
Similar allegations are contained in additional counts relating to posts made on Instagram via the account @harrisonmumia.
The images are said to have depicted the President on a hospital bed, misleadingly suggesting serious illness.
The state argues that the posts amounted to intentional dissemination of false information, an offence punishable under Section 22(1) of the Computer Misuse and Cybercrimes Act No. 5 of 2018.
