Onyango’s 19th-minute strike proved decisive as Gor Mahia secured a 1–0 win
over Kakamega Homeboyz, a result that saw the record FKF Premier League
champions return to the top of the standings.
Gor Mahia now sit
on 23 points from 12 matches, two points clear of KCB FC, Police FC, Tusker FC,
and Posta Rangers, who are all tied on 21 points.
The victory ended a
three-match winless run for Gor Mahia, which included a 4–1 defeat to APS
Bomet, a 1–0 loss to arch-rivals AFC Leopards in the Mashemeji Derby, and a
goalless draw against Bandari FC.
“We were coming
from a very difficult period after losing to AFC Leopards and drawing against
Bandari FC. However, we were pleased with our performance in the first half
against Kakamega Homeboyz.
“In the second
half, they made things difficult because they were not an easy side and were
pushing to score. What mattered most today was getting back to winning ways,
and we managed to do that,” said Akonnor.
On the other hand,
Kakamega Homeboyz head coach Patrick Odhiambo admitted his side fell short of
expectations.
“We lost the match,
and that’s not good. Some of the things we had planned didn’t work out. We now
have to go back to the drawing board, identify where we are lacking, and
improve in those areas,” Odhiambo said.
