Traders dealing in second-hand goods at Toi Market have raised serious concerns about the heavy losses they are incurring due to high taxes imposed on them each time they purchase goods.

They also accuse officials from the Nairobi County Government of constant harassment, which has forced many to abandon their businesses.

Philip Wambua, one of the traders, says the high taxation rates are significantly affecting their income and making it increasingly difficult to stay afloat.

“The business environment here is unbearable. The harassment is too much, and sales are also dwindling,” Wambua said.

Edwin, a shoe vendor at the market, echoed similar frustrations. He says the continuous losses are discouraging many from venturing into business, yet they are forced to keep going just to make a living.

“The government seems more focused on tax collection than solving the problems we face,” Edwin lamented.

He also highlighted the unhygienic conditions of the market and a lack of street lighting, which limits their working hours due to fear of criminal attacks.

“If the authorities cared about our welfare, they would have addressed these issues by now,” he added.

According to the traders, the high taxes have forced them to increase their prices, which is driving customers away and leading to lower daily income.

They are now appealing to the national government to improve money circulation in the economy and are urging the county government to address hygiene and security issues within the market.
