Police have intensified the fight against illegal liquor in Kibra, Nairobi County.

This comes amid an increase in consumption and sale of chang’aa, particularly among the youth.

Residents claim that young people are being exploited and used as intermediaries in the illegal liquor trade.

Kennedy Odhiambo, a long-time resident of Kibera, expressed concern over the worsening trend.

"We see it every day—youths are being exploited to sell and distribute chang’aa. It’s destroying our future generation."," Odhiambo said.

Following this, the government has pledged action. Kibra Deputy County Commissioner (DCC) Mohamed Abbas said that a crackdown is underway, targeting both the sellers and the suppliers.

"Operations will be conducted across Kibra to root out those behind the sale and distribution of chang’aa. Those found selling will be arrested and prosecuted," Abbas added.

He noted that security agencies have already mapped out hotspots within the informal settlement and urged residents to support the operation by sharing information.

The production and sale of chang’aa, a potent and often dangerous local brew, is illegal under Kenyan law, yet it remains widely available in many informal settlements.

Authorities warn that apart from health risks, the liquor trade has been linked to rising crime, school dropouts, and family breakdowns.

Abbas reiterated the government’s commitment to protecting youth from the grip of illicit alcohol and called on the community to be vigilant.

“We cannot allow a situation where the youth are misused and their lives ruined. Everyone involved whether selling, distributing, or importing chang’aa—will face the law,” he warned.

Local leaders and community-based organizations are also expected to partner with authorities in awareness campaigns and rehabilitation efforts for those already affected.

As the crackdown unfolds, residents of Kibera remain hopeful that the government's resolve will bring change and restore order in the fight against illicit liquor.
