In the villages of Amoni, Akiriamas and Akiriamasit, hundreds of acres of maize, beans and other crops have been washed away, leaving residents worried about how they will feed their families in the coming weeks. Several homes have also been damaged, forcing some families to seek shelter with neighbors and relatives.
“This was our only source of food and income. Now the water has taken everything,” said one farmer in Amoni.
Parents are also concerned about the health risks posed by the stagnant water, which has become a breeding ground for mosquitoes. “Our children are already falling sick, and we fear an outbreak of malaria,” said a mother.
The residents are appealing for immediate relief in the form of food aid, mosquito nets and shelter. They are also urging the government to build embankments along the rivers to provide a lasting solution to the floods that have become a frequent menace.
“This cannot keep happening every rainy season. We need a permanent solution, not just emergency food,” said another resident.
