Former world javelin champion Julius Yego says he feels “one big throw” is still in him as he fine-tunes for the 2025 World Athletics Championships in Tokyo and the Zurich Diamond League.
The Rio 2016 Olympic silver medallist ended a nine-year wait for a Diamond League leg win on August 16 in Silesia, Poland, with a throw of 83.60m, beating 2012 Olympic champion Keshorn Walcott (82.54m) and Moldova’s Andrian Mardare (82.38m SB).
“I feel it! Hopefully it comes in Tokyo or even Zurich,” said Yego.
Yego has been sharpening his technique at a high-performance camp in Miramas, France, alongside Africa’s fastest man Ferdinand Omanyala.
“Javelin is all about technique. I’m working on the final phases two weeks before the Tokyo Worlds. Everything is well since I came here (Miramas),” he added.
Yego wrote history in 2015, launching a monster 92.72m throw to become the first and only Kenyan to win a global field event title, defeating Egypt's Ihab El-Sayed (88.99m) and Finland's Tero Pitkämäki (87.64m).
In Zurich on Thursday, he faces a world-class line-up: Olympic silver medallist Neeraj Chopra (90.23m), two-time world champion Anderson Peters (93.07m), Germany’s Julian Weber (91.06m), Walcott (90.16m), and Mardare (86.66m).
