KCB
Rugby star Floyd Wabwire has hailed his team’s resilience and unity after
storming to victory in the 59th edition of the Christie Sevens, where the
bankers overpowered Menengai Oilers 26–7 in Sunday’s Main Cup final at the
RFUEA Grounds.
“Coming
to Christie Sevens we were determined to lift the trophy, and we’ve done
exactly that. We approached every match like a final, and that mentality paid
off. Every player understood our mission, we fought for it, and we achieved
it,” said Wabwire, who was named Player of the Match, in the final.
The
bankers, dominant across the National Sevens Circuit this season, set the tone
early. Wabwire broke through the Oilers’ defence for the opening try, with
Brian Wahinya converting for a 7–0 lead. Festus Shiasi soon crossed the line
for a second, though Wahinya’s conversion drifted wide, giving KCB a 12–0
cushion at halftime.
After
the restart, Wabwire dazzled with a kick-and-chase effort that Wahinya
converted to extend the advantage to 19–0. The Oilers pulled one back through
Samuel Mwaura, but the conversion attempt went astray. Any hopes of a comeback
were dashed when KCB sealed the contest with a late try, Wahinya adding the
extras for a commanding 26–7 finish.
Head of
Athletic Performance Andrew Amonde praised the squad’s execution and
discipline. “Congratulations to the players who came in, worked hard, and
applied our game plan from the start of the tournament—and here we are,” said
Amonde.
The win
lifted KCB to the top of the National Sevens Circuit standings on 63 points,
five clear of nearest challengers Strathmore Leos, underlining their title
credentials with just two legs remaining.
