Trans Nzoia County will enhance its investment in the sports docket in a bid to inspire the next generation of sports talents as they aim to honor superstar Emmanuel Wanyonyi, who won gold in the 800m race in the just-concluded World Athletics Championships.

Wanyonyi, who hails from Kapretwa village, Saboti Ward, within Trans Nzoia County, has given aspiring runners from the county a reason to believe following a string of impressive results on the international scene this season.

Trans Nzoia Governor George Natembeya has lauded Emmanuel Wanyonyi, terming his excellence as a significant spur in the county's sports development initiatives.

“Wanyonyi has not only made Kenya proud but has also shown the youth of Trans Nzoia what determination, discipline, and talent can achieve. He is a true role model,” said Governor Natembeya

The governor encouraged young athletes and upcoming talents in the county to emulate Wanyonyi and other athletes' hard work and resilience, noting that sports can be a reliable source of livelihood in a time when youth unemployment remains a national concern.

“There are no jobs out here. Sports can feed you, lift your family, and open international doors. Let’s nurture and use our talents,” he added.

Kenya’s success in Tokyo was anchored by a new generation of champions, with Wanyonyi’s win marking a strong statement about the country’s continued dominance in middle-distance running.

His victory, alongside other Kenyan stars, helped secure Kenya’s second-place finish globally—reaffirming its status as a powerhouse in athletics.

Governor Natembeya also hinted at increased county investment in sports infrastructure and talent development programs to tap into the region’s rich athletic potential.
