Trans Nzoia County to honor 800m star Wanyonyi with enhanced sports investment kitty

Nzoia County will enhance its investment in the sports docket in a bid to
inspire the next generation of sports talents as they aim to honor superstar Emmanuel
Wanyonyi, who won gold in the 800m race in the just-concluded World Athletics
Championships.
Wanyonyi,
who hails from Kapretwa village, Saboti Ward, within Trans Nzoia County, has
given aspiring runners from the county a reason to believe following a string of
impressive results on the international scene this season.

Nzoia Governor George Natembeya has lauded Emmanuel Wanyonyi, terming his
excellence as a significant spur in the county's sports development initiatives.
“Wanyonyi
has not only made Kenya proud but has also shown the youth of Trans Nzoia what
determination, discipline, and talent can achieve. He is a true role model,”
said Governor Natembeya
The
governor encouraged young athletes and upcoming talents in the county to
emulate Wanyonyi and other athletes' hard work and resilience, noting that
sports can be a reliable source of livelihood in a time when youth unemployment
remains a national concern.
“There
are no jobs out here. Sports can feed you, lift your family, and open
international doors. Let’s nurture and use our talents,” he added.
Kenya’s
success in Tokyo was anchored by a new generation of champions, with Wanyonyi’s
win marking a strong statement about the country’s continued dominance in
middle-distance running.
His
victory, alongside other Kenyan stars, helped secure Kenya’s second-place
finish globally—reaffirming its status as a powerhouse in athletics.
Governor
Natembeya also hinted at increased county investment in sports infrastructure
and talent development programs to tap into the region’s rich athletic
potential.
