St Peter’s Mumias, Kinale Girls win national rugby 7s titles

St Peters coached by head coach Nelson Jaika, who has served for a long time under former St Peters and Butula Boys rugby head coach Livondo Shimenga, had to change tactics after being beaten by the same Koyonzo 19-12 in the group stages on Thursday.

St Peters who last won the 7s title at the nationals in 2015 thrashed Bungoma High 12-7 in semifinal while Koyonzo beat last year’s champions Friends School Bwake 12-05.

Champions St Peter’s Mumias, Koyonzo, Bungoma and Bwake have all qualified for the East Africa Games which are penciled for August 14th-26 here in Kakamega County by virtue of reaching semifinals.

In the final, St Peter’s got their two tries through Clinton Njenga who also converted twice to go 14 points while Koyonzo managed 12 points thanks to Miracle Koipotot who was on the score sheet with two tries with Boniface Makokha converting but the 2023 champions missed one conversion to give St Peters the win and sweet revenge.

In the girls’ rugby, Kinale won the title afterbeating St Joseph's JOBO 17-05 in the final.

Kinale thrashed St Theresa 30-07 in semi final two after St Josephs had overpowered Paul Harris 10-07 in semifinal one.

Bungoma High have finished third after defeating Bwake 07-00 in boys rugby while St Theresa finished third in girls after defeating Paul Harris 17-00.

Fifth place was taken by St Mary’s YALA who beat Musingu High 10-05 while Mwira girls beat Kimobo to finish fifth in girls.

Madira Girls finished ninth after beating Sigot 07-05 while Anjego Boys beat Laiser Hill 07-05 to finish ninth in boys.

Volleyball

In Volleyball, Malava will face defending Champions Cheptil in the boys final this Friday. Malava from Western clawed Gogo from Mombasa three sets to nil while champions Cheptil hammered Mwaluphamba by the same margin in the semifinals.

In girls volleyball final, East Africa champions Kesogon will rekindle their rivalry with national champions Kwanthanze girls on Saturday.

Kesogon hammered Bishop Sulumeti from Western three sets to nil while their arch-rivals Kwanthanze beat Soweto from Nairobi by the same margin to book what is seen as an electric battle of the giants.

Basketball

In basketball, Sigalame will play Pioneer in the boys final after Sigalame beat St Joseph’s JOBO 21-18 while Pioneer crashed St Marys Yala 21-12 in the semi-finals.
