In an announcement shared on the club’s official social media platforms, Sofapaka welcomed Kungah, describing his arrival as timely ahead of the new season.
“We are very pleased and excited to introduce Herbert Kungah as our new Sofapaka FC CEO. He brings on board a wealth of experience and marketing skills that will be useful for the team going forward this season. Welcome, Sir, to Batoto Ba Mungu,” the club shared.
Kungah, 38, is well known in Kenyan football circles. A former defender with Nairobi City Stars and Ligi Ndogo FC, he transitioned into the corporate side of sports after retiring from active play. His most recent role was as Kenya’s market lead for sportswear company Mafro Sports, where he worked in marketing, operations, and events management.
Beyond corporate roles, he is also the founder of Wacheza-Tu-Invest, an initiative that mentors players on financial literacy and prepares them for life after football.
His appointment comes just two months after former CEO Ronald Okoth left to join Tanzanian side Kagera Sugar. Kungah now faces the pressing task of securing sponsorships and partnerships, a challenge that has haunted Sofapaka since it lost its main sponsor in early 2024.
The club, which finished seventh last season with 46 points, will be looking to improve its league standing while also stabilising its financial footing.
Without strong commercial backing, the Batoto ba Mungu brand has struggled to match the ambition of its early years when it shocked Kenyan football by lifting the league title in 2009.
