The race, which marked climax of the Mount Kenya Trail Series powered by Kenya Tourism Board (KTB) under the Magical Kenya Brand, saw Shadrak Korir and Josphat Tuwei complete the podium for the men’s elite category, timing 48:52:15 and 49:01:87 respectively.
Selelo, who trains in Narok County, was thrilled not only to beat the strong field but to compete in what he called an exciting but challenging course.
"I'm happy because I won although I came with lower expectations. This course is so good for mountain running, and I think it deserves a place in the World Mountain Run circuits. I really enjoyed running here," said Selelo.
Korir said the race has motivated him to venture more into mountain running, being his debut after years of road running.
"This is my first race of this kind, although I've been doing road running for five years now. The course was challenging, but we encouraged each other. I think I want to do this more. It would be great to come and run here once more," said a relaxed Korir in an interview with Citizen Digital after the race.
Gladys Songol and Regina Wambui, both of Nairobi, clinched the first two positions in the women’s 14km race, in 56:56:11 and 57:46:71 respectively.
Jedidah Chepkemoi who trains in Nakuru finished third, in a time of 57:52:01.
Hundreds of runners in 8km category, which included the Corporate Athletes and Masters Athletes, competed at the event.
Meru County Deputy Governor Linda Kiome congratulated the athletes and race organisers, saying the Meru University Mountain Run is another major highlight of sports tourism, which the County is keen to grow further.
"Today we are seeing part of the greatness within Meru County, and what we want to see more and more. We have athletes from far and wide competing here, and it is so fulfilling to welcome them in Meru County," she averred.
