KCB Rugby lifted the title of the 59th edition of the Christie Sevens after outmuscling Menengai Oilers 26–7 in a pulsating Main Cup final at RFUEA Grounds on Sunday.
The bankers, who have been in imperious form throughout the series, struck first when Floyd Wabwire sliced through the Oilers’ defence to dot down under the posts, with Brian Wahinya slotting in the extras for a 7–0 lead.
Festus Shiasi then added a second try to extend KCB’s advantage, though Wahinya’s conversion attempt drifted wide as the sides went into the break with a 12–0 cushion.
After the restart, Wabwire showcased his pace again with a brilliant kick-and-chase effort that he grounded before Wahinya calmly converted to stretch the lead to 19–0.
Oilers, who had edged Strathmore Leos in a dramatic semi-final, responded through Samuel Mwaura, though the conversion went wide.
KCB, however, were not done. A late surge saw them cap off the victory with another try, Wahinya converting to seal a 26–7 triumph and hand the bankers the Christie Sevens crown.
Earlier, Strathmore Leos secured third place after a 24–19 sudden-death win over Kenya Harlequins, with Gabriel Ayimba producing the decisive moment.
Kabras Sugar claimed ninth place after edging Mwamba 12–7, while Nondescripts saw off Impala RFC 28–17 in the fifth-place playoff.
In the women’s category, Mwamba were crowned champions after edging Kenya Harlequins 14–5 in a physical final.
Division Two honours went to Kabete Stallions, who brushed aside Makueni RFC 22–0 to secure the crown.
The victory pushed KCB to the summit of the National Sevens Circuit log with 63 points, five clear of Strathmore Leos.
Speaking after the final, KCB coach Dennis Mwanja said he was delighted with the Christie triumph but urged his charges to remain grounded.
“I’m happy we managed to clinch Christie, but our full focus now shifts to Embu Sevens. We are taking it one tournament at a time and not getting carried away with title talk. The key is to capitalize on the five-point gap we’ve opened,” said Mwanza.
The series now shifts to Embu this coming weekend for the Embu Sevens, where KCB will seek to tighten their grip on the title race.
