Speaking during an inspection tour of one of the 13 CHAN fan zones at Baba Dogo Grounds in Nairobi, the two officials noted that the tournament had exposed both strengths and gaps in organization, which they promised would be addressed before the continent’s biggest football showpiece.
PS Omollo admitted that there were “minor inconveniences” at the start of CHAN but emphasized that corrective measures had already been put in place.
“Despite the minor inconveniences brought about by the tournament, we have fixed all the gaps even as Kenya prepares to host the continental showpiece final on August 30th. With the massive investment in sports infrastructure, it is our responsibility to guard these facilities. This is just the beginning for new sports support and redevelopment,” he said.
On his part, Sports PS Elijah Mwangi praised the tournament’s organization, stressing that it reflected the government’s growing commitment to sports. He revealed that some facilities will undergo upgrades ahead of AFCON.
“Nyayo Stadium will no longer serve as a match-day ground but will instead be transformed into a training facility during AFCON 2027. This is part of our broader strategy to ensure all venues meet international standards,” he explained.
Mwangi also struck a patriotic note, expressing confidence in the national team’s chances. “Without doubt, Harambee Stars will be expected to win the cup. With the rewards from hosting and competing, we look forward to supporting sports development. But the government alone cannot shoulder this responsibility—it calls for partnerships across the board,” he added.
The assurance comes as the CHAN 2024 tournament enters its final stretch, with Kenya set to host the grand finale at Kasarani Stadium.
Both officials reiterated that the experience will act as a dress rehearsal for AFCON 2027, setting the stage for Kenya to shine on the continental stage.
