Kenya Police FC are confident and fully prepared
ahead of their CAF Champions League preliminary round clash against Somalia’s
Mogadishu City FC, set for this Saturday at Nyayo Stadium in Nairobi.
The law enforcers, making their continental debut
after dominating Kenyan Premier League last season, will be looking to navigate
the two-legged tie to advance to the next stage.
Speaking during the official pre-match press
briefing on Friday, head coach Etienne Ndayiragije exuded optimism about his
squad’s readiness, confirming that the team is injury-free and the camp
atmosphere is positive.
“We are well prepared. The mood in camp is excellent,
and all players are fit. We’ve blended experience and talent, and that gives us
an edge,” he said.
The return leg is scheduled for September 26-28
where the winner will qualify for the second-round and face either South
Sudan’s Jamus FC Juba or Sudanese giants Al Hilal.
The aggregate winner of that tie will book a coveted
place in the Champions League group stage.
The Burudian coach expressed confidence in using his
senior players, including internationals who missed pre-season, noting that
although they were late to camp, they have the quality to adapt quickly and
deliver on the big stage.
He also highlighted the recent addition of Alpha
Onyango — formerly of Simba SC — saying he is pleased to have him in the squad.
“Alpha brings great experience. Having him in our
team is a big boost,” he added.
Eteinne acknowledged Mogadishu City as a decent side
after watching them during CECAFA competitions, but insisted his side will
capitalize on home advantage and depth in quality.
Team captain cheche echoed his coach’s confidence,
stating the team is better prepared than last season and has a clear goal: to
reach the group stages of the competition.
“We’ve learned from last season. This time, we are
more united and focused. We’ve worked hard in pre-season and believe we can
make history,” he said.
He also called on fans to rally behind the team,
promising a more dynamic, attacking style with more goals as they chase CAF
glory.
This year’s competition has attracted a record 62
clubs, with giants Al Ahly of Egypt and South Africa’s Mamelodi Sundowns,
receiving byes to the second round based on their CAF Club Ranking.
