Shabana FC Head Coach Peter Okidi was satisfied with their 4-2 win over debutants APS Bomet at the Gusii Stadium on Sunday, saying it was a good start for the 2025/26 Kenyan Premier League campaign.

Buoyed by their fans who filled the Gusii Stadium in their characteristic exuberance, Shabana were on fire from the start, scoring in the third minute through Kenyan international Brian Michira who would complete his brace nine minutes later from the spot.

In the 20th, the Glamour Boys struck again, this time through Ezekiel Omuri, further showing their intentions for the season with a free-flowing style.

Derrick Otieno found the back of the net deep into extra time to seal the win for the hosts, although lapses in the proceedings had given Bomet two goals goalkeeper Bob Cedric (from the spot) and Hansel Ochieng, hence the 4-2 final score.

In his post-match remarks, Okidi praised his charges for the hunger they showed from the start, saying it proved crucial in sealing the win.

"We are happy that we won and we have concluded the match without any injuries. It is is important to win the first match of the season especially playing at home where our fans have really exhibited great support.

"I give it to the players also for their determination, which we can only improve on as we go into the next matches. The season is just starting, so we have to keep improving," noted Okidi.

His opposite number Michael Nam graciously conceded the defeat, which marked their first ever Kenyan Premier League match.

"We can't blame our players at all. It was our first match at this level yet we showed commendable boldness especially pulling two goals back after going down 3-0 within the first 30 minutes.

"We have picked vital lessons which I believe will be crucial in our next matches," he averred.

In their third straight season since their return to the Kenyan Premier League, Shabana are aiming for the title, while APS Bomet will be keen to compete favourably and retain their slot for next season.

"Our aim is to win the Premier League title at least by our third season. However, we are not limiting ourselves to early glory if it comes," club's Board Chairman Bishop Fred Akama told Citizen Digital in an earlier interview.

Shabana will next face Bandari FC away at the Mbaraki Sports Club in round two of the Premier League, while APS Bomet will be hosting Murang’a SEAL.
