Sevens stars Patrick Odongo and Kevin Wekesa will represent Monaco Rugby Sevens
in the 2025 French Super Sevens season, which kicks off on August 16 in
Mont-de-Marsan, France.
The two players are expected to
miss the ongoing National Sevens Circuit in Kenya as they join the 16-team
professional rugby sevens league.
Odongo and Wekesa, who made
headlines in June for becoming the first Kenyan players to compete in India's
inaugural Rugby Premier League, now aim to make an impact in Europe.
Wekesa is no stranger to the
French circuit, having competed with Monaco Rugby Sevens in 2024, winning
bronze in Pau and silver in La Rochelle.
Odongo, on the other hand, will
be making his debut in the high-profile tournament.
Their team, Monaco Rugby Sevens,
will be gunning for the overall title, last won in 2022 with the help of another
Kenyan star, Alvin ‘Buffa’ Otieno.
The squad hopes to reclaim the
title from defending champions Barbarian Rugby Club this year. Additional
professional players are expected to join Odongo and Wekesa in Monaco’s lineup,
though names are yet to be confirmed.
The absence of the duo will be
felt in the local competition. Wekesa had earlier helped Kabras Sugar RFC to a
third-place finish in the Driftwood 7s, while Odongo's Daystar Falcons
struggled, finishing 12th.
Despite this, both players
are set for a bigger stage as they test their mettle among Europe’s elite.
The sixth edition of the French
Supersevens maintains the previous year’s format with three summer legs
followed by a grand finale in Paris at the La Défense Arena.
The tour includes events on
August 16 in Mont-de-Marsan, August 23 in Dax, and August 30 in Pau, france, where
Wekesa has previously triumphed.
Their participation again
highlights Kenyan talent's growing influence on the global rugby sevens scene.
