High School hockey head coach Mike Malungu says his side is ready to capitalize
on home advantage to win the East Africa School Games title.
Speaking
to Citizen Digital, Malungu praised
his young squad’s discipline and determination during preparations for the
tournament, which will run from August 14 to 25 in Kakamega County.
“The
squad is young, very ambitious, disciplined, and eager to learn. We have seen
growth in the team, and we want to make our home fans proud when the competition
begins,” said Malungu.
Musingu
has lifted the national title for the past two years, defeating arch-rivals St
Antony Kitale in the finals. However, Malungu knows it will be tough to face
them again in the round-robin format.
“St
Antony are a very good team. We have faced them at the highest level, and they
make us a better team every time we play. This tournament will be no
different,” he added.
The
veteran coach also acknowledged that Ugandan teams sometimes have an edge due
to their education system, which allows Form Five and Six students to
participate.
“They
always have that advantage because they keep their teams together for longer
compared to us. But that is no excuse — we are prepared to fight for the
title,” Malungu said.
