Speaking during the Kisumu leg of the trials held on Monday, MOFA Technical Director Aol Omondi says the initiative is central to the foundation’s long-term plan of building world-class talent that conforms with international football standards.
“We are trying to identify talent that matches MOFA’s philosophy. Unlike before, when we relied on school games, the process was not efficient, as it limited our reach to many sub-counties.
These trials offer a better platform for players to showcase their abilities while aligning with the latest demands and trends in global football,” said Omondi.
The trials, which target Junior Secondary learners (Grade 8 and 9) and Form Two students, are expected to run through several counties, including Bungoma, Mombasa, Malindi, and Homa Bay, before wrapping up later this month.
Omondi emphasised that the program is not only about spotting raw talent but also about grooming players to fit into MOFA’s 2026–2028 strategic plan, where promotion to the top-flight league remains the primary ambition.
“Our vision is to transform these young players into elite footballers who can compete internationally while still pursuing education. This is why we are building strong ties with schools and local clubs,” he added.
Last month, Ringa Boys joined the growing list of institutions working with MOFA, which already includes St. Mary’s Yala, St. Joseph’s Rapogi, Kisumu Boys, and St. Joseph’s Kitale. The partnerships form part of Michael Olunga’s long-term vision to create football centres of excellence nationwide.
MOFA’s track record already speaks volumes. Players from the academy have secured trials with Swedish side Vasalund Fotboll, while Rodgers Ouma Onyango enjoyed a three-month stint with the club earlier this year.
In 2024, MOFA defender Jefta Ochieng also moved to Sweden after being scouted during an elite camp at the M-Pesa Foundation.
With the current trials, MOFA aims to identify the next generation of football stars who can carry Kenya’s flag on the international stage.
