The South African coach revealed how extensive preparation in training paid dividends toward their dominant win in their final home World Cup qualifier before winding the qualification process away to Burundi and Ivory Coast in October.
"We did exactly what we said we wanted to do: take the game to them from the first minute,” he stated, praising the team’s ruthlessness in front of goal and their commitment to the game plan.
He lauded the players’ character under pressure—especially after the earlier defeat to Gambia—highlighting their ability to bounce back with clinical finishing and tactical discipline.
“The boys showed great character tonight. After the setback we had, they came out with the right attitude, pressed from the first whistle, and never allowed Seychelles to breathe. That’s the kind of response you want as a coach," said McCarthy.
Red-hot Ryan Wesley Ogam, starting for the first time in the qualifiers, seized the opportunity with a brace and showcased maturity beyond his years.
McCarthy was full of praise for the striker who is set to complete his move to Austrian Bundesliga side Wolfsberger AC, following the CHAN 2024 heroics.
Michael Olunga — despite facing public criticism in recent weeks — received strong backing from his coach.
McCarthy reaffirmed his importance to the squad, in light of the series of online remarks.
“People will always talk, but Michael remains crucial for me and the team. Every time he puts on the shirt, he gives everything. That’s what matters”.
Set-pieces were identified as a decisive element with McCarthy disclosing that the team had focused heavily on them in training — a strategy that paid off handsomely in the match.
Looking ahead, McCarthy emphasized the need to maintain momentum.
He floated the idea of regional mini-tournaments or friendlies against the likes of rivals Tanzania to keep the squad sharp, and ensure the team’s philosophy remains fresh as they regroup ahead of October’s fixtures.
