Kenya’s
Malkia Strikers have entered day three of their high-intensity training camp in
Vietnam as they prepare for the World Championship scheduled for August 22 –
September 7 in Thailand.
Captain
Meldina Sande says the technical bench is working to build chemistry within the
new-look squad, which features several fresh faces eager to impress.
“We’ve
just been trying to bond because being a young team, everyone is determined to
prove to the coach that they can deliver. Many players were fighting for a spot
in the final squad, with some heading to this competition for the very first
time,” Sande told Citizen Digital.
The team
has also been focusing on its long-standing weaknesses, particularly in
backcourt and net defense.
“Our
coaches have been working on reception, service, net, and backcourt
defense—areas that have troubled us for a long time. We’ve been polishing, and
we believe now everyone is ready for the championship,” Sande noted.
The
27-year-old skipper added that the squad is fully psyched up for the global
showdown.
“We’ve
worked hard, our coaches have put in a lot of effort, and we are ready to
compete. We believe we can defy the odds and make history.”
Sande
also called for greater government investment in sports infrastructure to
provide quality training facilities, which she believes are crucial for Kenya’s
preparations for both continental and global competitions.
As part
of their build-up, Malkia Strikers are set to play two friendlies—against Spain
and Vietnam—before departing for Thailand on Wednesday, August 20, 2025.
The
Kenya Volleyball Federation last week named a 16-member squad for the Vietnam
camp, with plans to trim it down to 14 before Thailand. However, training
partners Sarah Namisi and Marriane Sokoiyo failed to secure flights, meaning
all players currently in camp will make the trip.
The
10-time African champions have been drawn in Group G alongside former European
champions Poland, as well as Germany and hosts Vietnam.
