The national women’s volleyball team, Malkia Strikers, have intensified preparations for the 2025 FIVB Women’s World Championship, set to take place from August 22 to September 7 across multiple cities in Thailand.

The 10-time African champions have been drawn into a challenging Pool G alongside Poland, Germany, and Vietnam.

Currently training at the Nyayo National Stadium Gymnasium, the team is in residential camp as they fine-tune key technical areas.

Head coach Geoffrey Omondi, who also leads regular season champions Kenya Pipeline, says the focus has narrowed to three critical areas to fine-tune their preparations.

“We are concentrating on service, defense (both front and backboard), and setting. The players are in good physical condition, and we hope to perform better in Thailand,” said Omondi.

Responding to public concern over dropped players, Omondi stressed the importance of trusting the process of rebuilding the team.

“Selections were purely based on merit and performance, and sometimes Kenyans want quick results. Just like the other big teams, we are in a rebuilding process." He added.

Team captain Meldina Sande praised the squad’s work ethic in training, noting the intensity as players compete for final spots.

“Everyone is giving their all. We know the final squad will be trimmed from 20 to 14, and leading this group is an honor.

"We’re not going to Thailand just to compete; we want to leave an impression and represent the country well,” Sande affirmed.

Experienced outside hitter Veronica Odhiambo emphasized the importance of leadership and team spirit in camp.

“When we compete, we should at least beat one team. In training, I am always trying to motivate and nurture them into putting their best foot forward,” she said.

The final 14-player squad will be announced ahead of an international friendly tournament in Vietnam from August 15 to 20, which will serve as a crucial test before the World Championships begin.
