The Kenya National Amputee Football Team arrived back in the country on Monday night after clinching the Confederation of East and Central Africa Amputee Football (CECAAF) title in Bujumbura, Burundi.
Kenya secured
the championship with an emphatic 2-0 win over Tanzania in the final played on
Sunday at Intwari Stadium.
Despite their
remarkable victory, the team’s arrival was marked by disappointment as no
government officials were present to welcome them home. Bernard Ongondo, the
federation's president, expressed frustration over the lack of recognition,
urging the government to treat all sports equally.
“We expected to
be welcomed with dignity after making our country proud. The amputee football
team in Kenya is the best, and we are aiming for even bigger titles — continental
and global,” said Ongondo.
Team coach
Francis Ocholla praised his players for their dedication and hard work, noting
that the team remained unbeaten throughout the tournament. “The preparation was
solid. Every player gave their best, and now we are seeing the results. I urge
the team to continue working hard — greater success awaits,” he said.
Tournament’s Most
Valuable Player [MVP], Albert Mwakenga, attributed the team’s success to
intense training and discipline. He encouraged other persons living with
disabilities to embrace their abilities and explore their talents through
sports. “We trained hard, and that’s why we won. I want to tell those living
with disabilities — accept yourself, come out, and let your talent shine,” he
said.
Team captain
Nicholas Keiyo described the journey to Bujumbura as tough but rewarding. “It
wasn’t easy, but we gave our all. Winning this tournament is a huge motivation.
We also thank the government for the support it gave us,” Keiyo added.
The team now
shifts focus to continental and world competitions as they continue raising
Kenya’s flag high.
