National champions Butere Girls, Madira
Girls, Western region kings Musingu Boys, and Rift Valley’s St. Joseph’s Jobo
have all booked their spots in the Kenya Secondary Schools Sports Association (KSSSA) semi-finals
after clinching their second straight wins in matches held in Kakamega County.
Butere Girls, backed by a passionate home
crowd at Kakamega High School, brushed aside Nasokol Girls from West Pokot 2-0,
with striker Faith Wasike bagging a brilliant brace to seal the win.
Madira Girls from Vihiga County also
maintained their winning streak, defeating Mwanambeyu Girls 2-0 to advance.
In boys’ football, hosts Musingu High, nicknamed
"The Scorpions",
demolished Garissa High School 9-2 to book a place in
the semis, while St. Joseph’s Kitale edged Serani Boys from Coast Region 3-1
for their second win.
Meanwhile, Highway Boys from Nairobi face a
tough path to the knockout stage after settling for a 3-3 draw against Central
Region’s Kirangari Boys.
Back at Kakamega High, Butere Girls head
coach Edwin Sakwa praised his players for executing the game plan to
perfection.
“Today’s match was tough but I’m happy the
girls played very well according to the instructions and we wanted three points
which we have in the bag.
When you look at the opponents, they decided to defend
deep and so we had to think of a way to punish them using tactical mind which
we managed to pin them down,” said Sakwa.
“My players have been so good and everything they are doing is being
replicated straight away from the training ground to the competitive matches”, he added.
Team captain Halima Imbachi Omar, who also
features for the Harambee Starlets U-17 side, echoed her coach’s sentiments.
“I am thrilled with the way we have played and the second win which gives us the momentum to keep winning and move forward. We are psyched up and we are ready for the next match keeping in mind that we are defending the title,” said Imbachi.
