Koyonzo High School’s long-serving rugby
head coach, Eliud Okwemba, has officially joined Bokoli High after seven years
at the helm of The Stommers.
Okwemba, a trained teacher, confirmed that
his transfer was effected by the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) and will see
him take up Kiswahili, religion, and rugby responsibilities at Bokoli.
“I have been transferred by my employer TSC
from Koyonzo to Bokoli High. I arrived at Bokoli High yesterday and as I speak
to you now I am officially a teacher at Bokoli Secondary”, Okwemba confirmed.
The coach, who helped Bungoma High clinch
the 2016 national 15s title, has pledged to transform Bokoli’s rugby side from
“mere participants” into serious contenders.
“I have found out that Bokoli High rugby
team has been what we can call participatory in school games rugby but I want
to change that narrative to become competitors and not participants,” he said.
“I am fully aware that Bungoma County has rugby heavyweights like
Bungoma High who have managed to be first runners up in East Africa School
Games, there is also Kibabii High, Kamusinde and Friends School Kamusinga but I
have just come to bring competition in to this game,” he warned rivals in Bungoma County.
A highly decorated tactician, Okwemba
guided Koyonzo to multiple titles, including the 2023 East Africa 7s crown. He
expressed confidence that The Stommers will continue shining even in his
absence.
“We have been at Koyonzo for the last seven years and we have managed to win a lot of titles including one East Africa and national titles and that’s what we have done. I leave behind experienced players who are so good and I would love to see them shining more”, Okwemba said
