The national men’s hockey team is optimistic of delivering
strong performances at the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations, scheduled to take
place in Ismailia, Egypt, from October 11 -18. The current squad of 25 players
will be trimmed to 18 by head coach Michael Malungu before the tournament
begins.
Kenya is aiming to build on her performance from the 2022
edition, where the team finished fourth. This year, the team is determined to
push further and secure a podium finish.
Speaking ahead of the tournament, experienced player Ivan
Lugeli expressed confidence in the team’s potential.
“We need to push ourselves more this time. It hasn’t been
great in recent years, but we have a young and talented group. We’re really
focused on improving and climbing up the rankings,” he said.
Team member Bethwell Masambu echoed similar sentiments,
emphasizing the importance of unity and mental readiness. “For the younger
players, we’re trying to motivate them and prepare them mentally—without
pressure. The goal is to work as a team and make Kenya proud.”
Kenya will kick off her campaign against host nation Egypt,
followed by tough matches against South Africa, Ghana, Nigeria, and Zambia in
what promises to be a competitive pool.
