Kenya’s
rising esports star Harry Kappa marked another milestone for the country after
finishing fourth at the SBA Esports Cup, staged on September 7, 2025, at Zaria
Court in Kigali, Rwanda.
The 20-year-old had a spirited run despite a mixed start. He opened his campaign with a 1-1 draw against Nigeria’s Faruk Manzo before rallying to edge Rwanda’s Praise 3-2.
A 3-3 draw with Uganda’s Aksam saw him advance to the semifinals,
where he faced Africa’s top seed, Xmozaa of Egypt. Kappa fought hard
but bowed out 5-12, settling for a semifinal finish.
South
Africa’s Zaid April went on to claim the title, defeating Xmozaa 2-1 in a tense
final to bag the $2,500 top prize. Xmozaa earned $1,500, while Kappa and
Uganda’s Aksam each pocketed $500 for their joint third-place finishes.
Reflecting
on his performance, Kappa described the tournament as an eye-opener:
“This was my
first time facing top-ranked players, and I’ve learned a lot. I wanted more,
but I take pride in reaching the semis. I’ll take a short break before
returning stronger for the 2025/26 season,” he said.
Esports
Kenya President lauded Kappa’s efforts,
“We are
proud of Kappa. Not long ago, international tournaments felt out of reach. Now,
Kenyans are competing and holding their own. By 2027, when the Olympic Esports
Games debut, Kenya will be ready.”he told Citizen digital.
