Kenya’s Under -20 women’s volleyball team launched their African Championship campaign with a commanding 3-0 (25-14, 25-17, 25-20) victory over Senegal in Yaoundé, Cameroon.

Kenya Cup’s Most Valuable Player Terry Tata, who captains the squad, was named Player of the Match after an outstanding all-round performance that anchored the team to their opening win.

Going into the game, head coach Jackline Barasa expressed confidence in the 19-year-old outside hitter, banking on her continued brilliance to lead Kenya through the August continental tournament.

Kenya will on Tuesday face hosts Cameroon in what is to be a highly contested match from 6PM [EAT.]

Meanwhile, the senior women’s team, Malkia Strikers, entered residential camp at Summerdale Inn on Monday as they intensified preparations for the 2025 FIVB World Championship set to take place across five cities of Thailand from August 22 to September 7.

In a move to fine-tune the squad, the technical bench dropped three players ahead of the team’s next phase of preparation.

Kenya Pipeline’s opposite hitter Loise Simiyu, Kenya Prisons’ libero Delphine Misoki, and KCB’s middle blocker Pauline Chemutai were axed from the team.

Head coach Geoffrey Omondi will further whittle down the squad to 14 players before the ten-time African champions jet out for Vietnam on August 14.

The team will feature in an international friendly tournament in Vietnam from August 15 to 20, which will serve as a crucial test ahead of the global showpiece.

The Kenyan lasses are pooled in Group 'G' alongside former European champions Poland, Germany and Vietnam.

Kenya will open her World Championship campaign against Germany on August 23 at 1:00 PM EAT.
