Kenya is set to
mark a significant milestone in its sporting history as the national men and
women tchoukball teams make their debut at the third World Beach Tchoukball
Championships in Bali, Indonesia. The tournament will run from August 5 to 10,
2025, with 13 countries participating.
A contingent of
14 players—seven women and an equal number of women—departed Nairobi Monday
morning, brimming with excitement and national pride as they head to represent
the country on the world stage for the first time the sport.
Speaking ahead
of their first match, player Nickson Odhiambo expressed optimism, attributing
their readiness to a productive training camp held at Kenya’s coastal region.
“Our preparations in camp has been good, the
technical bench has supported us in every way. We know the competition is going
to be tough but we are optimistic that we are bringing the victory home,” he
said.
Kenya Tchoukball
Federation Secretary General Keziah Odero emphasized the importance of this
debut appearance, calling it a historic step for the sport in the country.
“This is our
first time at such a prestigious global event. The government’s support has
been instrumental in getting us here, and we believe it will open more doors
for the sport locally,” she noted.
Tchoukball is a
fast-paced, non-contact team sport that emphasizes strategy and precision. It
is played on a beach court with two rebound frames at either end.
A goal is scored when the ball bounces off the
rebounder and lands outside the crease without being caught by the opposing
team.
Each game consists of two 20-minute halves,
and teams start with a jump ball at center court.
