The bankers dramatically sealed their crown after edging Strathmore Leos 15–14 in a pulsating Dala 7s Cup quarterfinal at the Jomo Kenyatta International Stadium in Mamboleo, Kisumu.
The victory not only propelled KCB into the semifinals but also guaranteed them at least 119 points in the overall standings—enough to mathematically lock out all their closest challengers, Strathmore Leos and secure the season title.
With this triumph, KCB has surpassed perennial giants Kenya Harlequin, Impala RFC, and Mwamba RFC, each of whom has won the national circuit four times.
Sunday’s showdown was the perfect stage for KCB to avenge earlier losses to the Leos. Strathmore had been the only team to beat KCB this season, handing them rare defeats at the Prinsloo 7s (24–7) and Embu 7s (31–21).
Determined to overturn that record, the bankers who so far have won the Christies, Kabeberi, and Driftwood legs displayed grit and composure in front of an electrified Kisumu crowd.
The match itself was a classic. KCB struck first through star winger Vincent Onyala, whose unconverted try put the bankers 5–0 ahead. Strathmore responded swiftly, scrum-half Brian Mwendwa darting over for a converted effort to hand the Leos a 7–5 halftime lead.
The second half delivered more drama. Former Leos player and Kenya Sevens international George Ooro crossed the line to nudge KCB back in front 10–7, only for Strathmore’s Samuel Wafula to reclaim the advantage with a converted try that made it 14–10.
With time expiring, Ooro—playing against his former side—delivered a moment of magic, crashing over for his second try to seal a stunning 15–14 victory.
This latest title adds to KCB’s growing list of circuit triumphs, joining their previous championships in 2013, 2014, 2019, and 2023.
The full roll of honour underscores their achievement: from Impala’s dominance in the early 2000s to the emergence of Homeboyz, Kabras Sugar, and Menengai Oilers, no club has matched KCB’s consistency and hunger.
The 2025 Dala 7s continues on Sunday evening, with KCB eyeing yet another tournament win. Regardless of the semifinal outcome against 2025 Kabeberi finalists Daystar Falcons, the bankers’ place atop the national 7s circuit is already secured.
Their ability to rally under pressure, combined with the squad’s heroics and talent, has set a new benchmark in Kenyan rugby sevens excellence—cementing KCB as the most decorated team in the history of the National 7s Circuit.
