KCB Rugby head coach Dennis Mwanja has applauded his players for their resilience and discipline after storming to victory in the 59th edition of the Christie Sevens at the RFUEA Grounds on Sunday.
“Our
target was to win this cup, especially after falling short in Nakuru,” said
Mwanja. “The boys were composed, disciplined, and worked hard to redeem themselves.”
Mwanja,
who took over this season from Oliver Mang’eni on an interim basis, stressed
that the bankers will not get carried away by the triumph, with focus already
shifting to the Embu Sevens next weekend.
“We are
not going to be swayed by this result. Our focus quickly shifts to Embu, though
the pressure is slightly less now that we are five points clear,” he added.
KCB
lifted their second 2025 National Sevens Circuit trophy after overpowering
Menengai Oilers 26–7 in a thrilling Main Cup final, securing their eighth
Christie Sevens crown and reaffirming their dominance in local sevens rugby.
It was
the first time the two sides met in a final since the 2024 Kabeberi Sevens,
which KCB also won. In Nairobi, the bankers combined defensive solidity with
sharp attacking play, bouncing back strongly after falling to Strathmore Leos
in the Prinsloo Sevens final in Nakuru.
Having
also bagged the Driftwood Sevens earlier this season, KCB’s consistency has
cemented their reputation as the team to beat in the series.
Despite
the defeat, Oilers head coach Geoffrey Ominde took pride in his side’s steady
improvement.
“I am
proud of the boys because they have shown progress. Unfortunately, KCB’s
experience took the better of us today, but we will build on this and come back
stronger,” said Ominde.
The
Christie Sevens result reshaped the standings, with KCB moving top on 63
points, five clear of Strathmore Leos (58), who finished third. Oilers’
impressive run to the final earned them 19 points, lifting them to 47 and
rounding off the top three.
With the Embu Sevens set for August 23–24, Mwanja’s men will aim to stretch their lead in the race for the 2025 National Sevens Circuit crown.
